Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (Bengali: বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিব মেডিকেল বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়) is the first and only medical university in Bangladesh. It is a public university, established in 1999. The university offers MD, PhD, MS, MPhil, MDS, Diploma and FCPS Courses. The current vice chancellor is Prof. Pran Gopal Datta.

Establishment of the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University was essentially an upgradation of the Institute of Postgraduate Medicine and Research (IPGMR), populary referred to as PG. IPGMR was established in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh)by the then Government of Pakistan in December 1965, as a Government-controlled postgraduate institute for medical research and studies. It was housed now defunct Hotel Shahbag, once the biggest hotel in Dhaka. The neighbourhood got its name Shahbag from the name of that hotel. From 2010, many of the medical and public health colleges/institutes have come under common affiliation to BSMMU. For example BIRDEM, BIHS, DMC, NICVD, NITOR and many others. In different post graduation courses many foreigners, notably from Nepal and Bhutan are studying. For example in main University (Rajat Kayastha, Archan Rana, Sudhanshu Jha, Satya Narayan Chaudhary) as well as in affiliated colleges like Bangladesh Institute of Health Sciences,BIHS. (Kiran Niraula, Janaki Parajuli, Pukar Thapa, Pradip Mishra, Sarswoti Shrestha from Nepal, Zahara Ali Rizvi from Pakistan and Kalyan Bhowmik from India)
It was renamed as Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University by the Act (No. 1, 1998) of Jatiyo Sangshad after the first President of Bangladesh, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.[1]
The university is now autonomous body governed by a 24-member syndicate. BSMMU comprises 36 Departments under 4 faculties. The university campus is located at Shahbag. It has a compact campus with a 1500 bedded hospital.[2]
BSMMU is also equipped with a modern academic library known as BSMMU Central Library as well as a separate digital library.
BSMMU Campus has five main multistoried buildings that are identified as Blocks A, B, C, D and Cabin Block.[1]
